One of my greatest discoveries in Korean cosmetics is the toner. For a while I had no idea what it was. All I knew was tonic water, and I remembered it as a strong alcoholic lotion that burned. Toner, especially Korean toner, is something completely different.

On the other hand, toner is supposed to give your skin a feeling of relief and strong hydration, like when you finally drink when you're thirsty. Although toners are sometimes claimed to cleanse the skin, don't think of it as a full make-up removal step.

Toner is always applied to skin that has already been exfoliated and cleansed.

The consistency of toners is interesting. It's like a lotion, but it's not. Toners can vary in consistency from the thinnest, i.e. like water, to a syrupy consistency or even a gel that turns into a moisturising liquid on contact with the skin.

Betaine is a derivative of the amino acid glycine. This cell-protecting secondary plant micronutrient is found in many wild plants. Betaine helps plants survive in dry and salty environments.
